Anxiety Relief

Ugggg. Anxiety! We all suffer from it at different times. It takes the joy out of life when it strikes. Here is a simple, proven technique that will give you immediate relief:  Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT. (By the way, there is another EFT acronym out there known as Emotionally Focused Therapy, which is a whole different thing.) I’m not big on acronyms or fancy names…so I just call this “the tapping thing”. Here’s how it goes…
Start tapping (with a little force—not so it hurts) on the top of your head, on both sides, bilaterally. As you tap, take a deep breath and hold for five seconds. Let your breath out slowly to the count of 5. Keep tapping. Now, say something positive to yourself, an affirmation, like, “I am safe”, “I am loved”, or “I am wise”. Try to tailor your statements to the situation that is currently causing you anxiety … don’t worry if you don’t believe these statements…say them to yourself anyway!
Bring the tapping down both sides of your body, to your cheekbones, your collarbones, your sternum, your thighs, and shins. Meanwhile, alternate taking deep breaths and saying affirmations to yourself. Work your way back up your body with the tapping, ending at the top of your head. If you do this for 2-3 minutes, you will feel an immediate let-down, relaxing feeling. It can be a huge help in keeping anxiety in check.
You will probably want to do this in a private space, like your car or in the bathroom stall at work.
